Surfers, Woolacombe Dunes

'Surfers, Woolacombe Dunes' was painted from Marine Drive at Woolacombe Bay, above the dunes that lead down to the beach.

If you have surfed Woolacombe, you will know it well.

It was painted on the spot in one sitting with oils on a 16 x 12 inch stretched canvas.

Catching a light shift like this and looking straight into the glare from the sea creates quite a few challenges for the artist.

The sun was high and it was late in the afternoon. The light was dazzling on the waves and the surfers became little more than silhouettes trudging up the hot, deep sand of the dunes.

On the horizon to the left I could just about make out the island of Lundy through the summer haze.

Woolacombe Bay, Start of the Season

It's early season at Woolacombe Bay. A few surfers are in, the RNLI have training on the beach and the sand is looking pink in the muted glow of weak, new season sunshine.

Painted from atop the dunes at Marine Drive in Woolacombe, the scene shows the beach and dunes, mostly empty, but expectant of the busy surf season to come. For now the surfers are few and the holiday makers are nil, leaving the beach to the locals and dog walkers; having the place to themselves.

As with most of my original paintings, this one was painted on the spot. I wanted to try and catch the clouds and that weird light making the sands appear pink in front of me.

The original painting was created in oils on a 20 x 16 inch stretched canvas.

The Last Wave, Saunton Sands

Just one lone surfer left in the evening, waiting for that last wave to finish an epic day.

Saunton Sands, just around the corner from Croyde Bay has always held a special place in my heart. The massive, never ending beach and the choice of waves has always made it special.

This painting was done near the dunes about a 1/4 mile down the beach from the Saunton Sands Hotel and the carpark below, with the headland of Heartland Point off to the left.

I had spotted a few guys in the water and got myself set up for a good afternoon of painting and sketching from the beach. As the day wore on the light became, what I can only describe as glassy; the colours turning lilac, making silhouettes change hue in an instant and catching bright specs on the water.

Eventually the breaks between sets got longer and folks began to head back to the carpark. This one surfer stayed a while, holding his board and stretching a hand above his eyes to protect a little from the glare; he looked for all the world as if he was saying 'come on, just one more'.

I had already been painting and getting down the lilac colours so I was able to quickly paint him into the scene. A lucky break for me because it gave a real focus out of the beauty of those colours and he held that position just long enough for me to catch the essence of that moment.

The original painting was created in oils on a 24 x 18 inch stretched canvas, and getting that off the beach while still wet created a challenge all of its own! :-)

Charlecote Park on the Warwickshire Avon

Late afternoon, the sun is going down and the sweet scents of summer drift on the lazy, calming air. A lone fisherman casts for the biting Chub. What an irresistible subject.

This painting came about on a trip to the wonderful Charlecote Park in Warwickshire. At the back of the house I could see along the river and over towards St Peter ad Vicula church tower in Hampton Lucy nearby. The colours were just magical in the low, warm sun and I was able to sit with my sketch book and water colours, painting to my heart's content.

I could see the angler, wet fly fishing for chub further down stream. Seeing him get a tight line I scribbled down what I could and added my colours. Just for reference I shot a bunch of photo's as I believed this might make a great subject for an oil painting.

Normally I paint all in one go outside, however on this occasion I only had a small sketch pad and a little box of water colours with me. This allowed me to capture the warm glow and spontaneity I was looking for and enabled me to copy that onto a stretched 24 x 16 inch canvas in oils back at the studio.

The Avon at Malmesbury

Until moving to the wonderful coastal scenery that surrounds us here in North Devon, I had lived in the gorgeous and historic town of Malmesbury, Wiltshire, nestled in the Cotswolds.

I have happily painted in many of the beautiful locations around the Cotswolds and around Malmesbury itself. Turner famously sketched around the town, painting a wonderful aspect of the old abbey. Standing, quite literally, in his footsteps around the town and being able to paint some of the views he painted that still exist today is a real treat.

For this painting I had gone out early on a frosty morning, with snow still lying on the ground. The trees were barren, and the sunlight very pale and watery. I had found this spot to look back at Malmesbury and catch a view of the Abbey standing high on the hill.

When I arrived I forgot about the town and simply focused on the river, winding slowly past, reflecting the pale sun and the lavender hues of the snow and passing clouds.

I painted quickly in oils on my usual stretched canvas (14 x 10 inches) to capture the changing light, and I did so quickly because it was absolutely freezing; there wasn't much feeling left in my hands!

I guess this is one of my more impressionist pieces, and like to think that the spirit of Turner was looking over my shoulder as I painted through the cold.

Vauxhall On The Thames

The view at Vauxhall on the Thames looking down towards the old Battersea Power Station has a story all of its own. You can read all about it in the About section on my original paintings website.

The painting was created in situ and in the studio. From sketches on the bridge, desperately painting like mad, trying to capture the setting sun before it went, and finding its way across the pond to America, this painting was a work that I truly worked for.

The original piece was painted in oils on stretched canvas (24 x 18 inches). Although the original now has its home in the USA, I decided it would sit nicely in my collection of rivers.
